10th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference

Pre-Conference Sessions

The following pre-conference sessions will take place on Monday, July 15, 2019.

Prescription for Active Play: Strategies to Engage ALL Adults in Promoting Active Play for Young Children in Diverse Settings

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Active play promotes healthy growth and development for young children. It is also a vital and fun strategy for childhood obesity prevention that all adults – health care professionals, caregivers, parents, educators, and more – must be recruited to increase children’s time spent in active play. This interactive workshop will help novices and professionals: 1) learn the movement skills essential to healthy development, 2) identify how to assemble a team of active play advocates, and 3) become skilled in creating active play environments and opportunities. Activities and resources to overcome common barriers to active play will also be shared.

Diane Craft, PhD, RD, Professor, Department of Physical Education, SUNY Courtland
Arlene Turner, MS, Physical Activity Specialist, First 4 Orange County, Children and Families Commission
Candice Taylor Lucas, MD, HS Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, UC Irvine School of Medicine

Workshop Cost: $50 (includes materials)
Maximum Participants: 50

Engaging Parents to Action: Advancing School Wellness

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Engaging parents to advocate for healthier foods and beverages and physical activity is a key strategy for improving the school environment.  A 4-hour interactive training by partners California Action for Healthy Kids and Public Health Institute Center for Wellness and Nutrition will provide participants hands-on activities and effective tools to build parent skill, confidence, and engagement. Parent success to improve school meals, implement farm to school and nutrition education, reduce sugary drinks, and increase physical activity will be shared. Participants will be introduced to and apply the 4-step advocacy process to empower parents to affect change.

Applying Commercial Marketing Practices to Obesity Prevention: Ways to Improve Effectiveness, Maximize Efficiency, and Engage Communities More Fully in Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Programs

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

While people understand that eating healthier and getting more exercise leads to increased happiness and a decrease in health problems, they often don’t know how. We are inundated with unhealthy messages through ubiquitous advertising and fast food locations. This session showcases how applying commercial marketing practices that make unhealthy behaviors look desirable to positive health behaviors can shift people’s behaviors for the better.

Kristen Carroll, Chief Executive Officer, Rescue I The Behavior Change Agency

Workshop Cost: $50 (includes materials)
Maximum Participants: 150

Mobile Workshop Sessions

Waste Not OC Coalition

1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Waste Not OC Coalition is a public private food recovery effort facilitating the donation of excess edible food to local non-profit food banks, pantries, family resource centers and food recovery kitchens. This session will focus on food recovery as a means of reducing childhood hunger and the health risks associated with childhood obesity. We will dive into the heath effects with speakers from the county, how excess edible food is sourced at the food banks and repurposing and repackaging excess food into healthy nutritious meals with a tour of a food recovery kitchen.

Eric Handler, MD, Public Health Officer of County of Orange, OC Health Care Agency

Workshop Cost: $50

Maximum Participants: 55

Something Rad is Happening in Santa Ana!

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Santa Ana is the 4th densest city in the US. More than 50% of residents do not have access to a car. Of the highest populated cities in California, Santa Ana regularly ranks in the top three for pedestrian and bicycle involved collisions. Through extensive partnerships with community-based organizations and countrywide agencies, Santa Ana is changing its streets to improve safety and access for the most vulnerable roadway users. Tour Santa Ana by bike or scooter, see some of the recent projects that have been implemented and hear the stories behind how a city in Orange County came to embrace active transportation. This will be an active tour (either by bike, scooter, or foot). Participants will be on their feet for around 3 hours and should dress for active movement.

Cory Wilkerson, Active Transportation Coordinator, City of Santa Ana

Workshop Cost: $50
Maximum Participants: 55
